Kar Wei is an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya.

Kar Wei began his legal career in the Judiciary wherein he was a Senior Assistant Registrar in the Federal Court of Malaysia. During his stint in the Judiciary, he assisted Federal Court Judges and occasionally sat as Magistrate.

Subsequently, Kar Wei joined Messrs. Chooi & Company + Cheang & Ariff (a leading dispute resolution firm) as an associate. Prior to joining TCC Law, he was a senior associate in Messrs. Azim, Tunku Farik & Wong (a top-tiered dispute resolution firm).

Kar Wei has extensive experience in banking, corporate, commercial, fraud, insurance, land, land acquisition, professional negligence, tort, and tax disputes. He regularly handled complex and high-value disputes wherein some of these disputes are more than RM1 billion in quantum. He has also previously rendered legal advice (from a Malaysian perspective) to a Magic Circle Law Firm in the UK. Apart from that, he also acted as co-counsel in representing fellow advocates and solicitors in legal suits.

Kar Wei has appeared as counsel and co-counsel at all levels of the judicial system in Malaysia, including the Federal Court of Malaysia.

  • Rendered legal advice (from a Malaysian perspective) to a Magic Circle Law Firm in the UK.
  • Advised and acted for an auditor from a Big-4 auditing firm in the Malaysian Institute of Accountant’s disciplinary proceedings and impending litigation suit.
  • Acted for an advocate and solicitor and successfully overturning the Sessions Court and High Court decisions in a case involving novel issues of law viz stakeholder duties in respect of retired partners.
  • Acted for an advocate and solicitor and successfully defended a claim premised on fraud, conspiracy, and breach of stakeholder duties.
  • Acted for a law firm and successfully struck out a claim premised under conspiracy.
  • Advised and acted for one of the parties involved in the biggest financial scandal in Malaysia – the 1MDB scandal.
  • Acted for public-listed companies and/or subsidiaries in various Land Reference proceedings involving issues of land value and injurious affection in respect of plantation, commercial and residential properties.
  • Acted for a local insurance company in filing the 1st judicial review application against the Ombudsman for Financial Services.
  • Acted for a public-listed company in a Director & Officer’s Liability Insurance Claim involving Indian Law issues.
  • Acted for local insurance companies in various claims involving life insurance and general insurance policies.
  • Acted for an administrator of an estate before the Special Tax Commissioner to challenge the quantum of the RPGT tax assessed by the LHDN.
  • Acted for directors in a fraudulent trading suit and successfully resisted a Mareva Injunction being obtained against the directors.
  • Acted for a chiropractor in a suit involving breach of confidence, fraud and/or breach of contract and successfully resisted a Prohibitory Injunction being obtained against him.
  • Acted for a well-known transportation company in a breach of contract suit and successfully struck out the suit against it.
